My question for the experts is. I have a Colt 1911A1 made in march 1945. Looking to find the correct Magazine for it. Should it be marked with just the C on the toe, C with C-L on the botton, C with C-S,Or no markings at all??? Last should it be blue or Parkerized. Seems to be a lot of different opinions, so looking for it to be correct. You guys have always given good advise, so thanks in advance.

Wondering what my Colt 1911A1 .45 is worth. It was manufactured in 1965, is nickel plated, with two mags, original box and paperwork. Very good to excellent condition. Thanks for any info.

Now days firearms are more and more being rated by percentage of original finish remaining. It's difficult to reconcile the NRA grading system with the percentage system as the NRA system offers quite a bit of leeway between the lower and upper edge of Very Good. Assuming that your pistol is in about 85% condition I would venture it is worth $400. The box and papers would add $35-50. Magazines are not hard to come by, but for a Colt factory extra (used) add $15. So, $465 sounds about right.

Just watch the auction site for a while. Good Government Models bring good prices, although I do not think the auction site is the best place to sell higher value collector's items at top prices. (Not enough collectors appear to be into auctions.) I would speculate that a 35-year-old factory nickel with box and papers in near mint condition will bring $1000 or more. Of course, use only those listings that sell as a value guide. I have seen the same pieces of junk with far too high opening bids or reserves be listed repeatedly. Either the seller does not want to sell, or is looking for a sucker who is new to guns and thinks every old Colt is worth the price of a good used car. Someone who lists a "restored" Government Model for $2,000 plus needs some reality medicine, or an ignorant buyer. Over the years, I have run into people who bought refinished or altered guns without knowing it and then were insulted when they could not get a fourth of what they paid when they went to sell them. Some, of course, refused to believe their gun was not original and they think I am the ignorant one. Originality and condition determine the value. The value curve gets really steep towards perfect. Add a box and papers and the price spikes again. Having collected guns all my life, one thing I know for sure, is that no one knows for sure about anything. Good luck.
