Gentlemen, I have been a gun collector/buyer/user for over 40 years. I am lucky enough to own several collectable Colt 1911's including 2 Remmiongton Rand's, 1 Union Switch and Signal, and 1 Ithaca. I own a few other commercial Colt 1911's, but none of particular interest. I'm looking to add 2 or three commercial 1911's to my collection, and would be interested in your opinions as to what you think will gain the most collectable values in the future. I thank you in advance for your input.Regards,

Early, early commercial Colt 1911 (not A1). 1930's vintage .38 Super. National Match pistols.Of course, documentable presentation pieces and/or experimental variations.

I agree with the Doctor ALMOST 100%. The Pre-War pistols are all appreciating rapidly. The earliest high polish commercials are scarce and expensive. The Supers seem to really have taken off. The National Match pistols are uncommon and have always been premium pieces. I think the A1 style commercial pistols between the wars are good property. Recently, a nice military M1911A1 from 1937 got to $2475 on the auction site and did not meet the reserve. A commercial would be close if in the same condition. Add a box, target, etc., and you are above that figure. If you can add a "New Safety Device" (Swartz Safety) pistol to your collection, either in a National Match or Super, you will have hit close to the top. Of course, a Super Match is the ultimate, and I suppose there is one somewhere with a Swartz Safety, but I have never been able to find it. (I think the Blue Book has the Super Match way undervalued.) If you find one, it will probably take a big truck to haul the money required. Happy hunting.
