How to tell Savage by serial number?

I have a .300 Savage lever action made by Savage and I can't find a model number just the serial number. Is there a way or website that I can find out what model it is?

You very likely have a Model 99, and if you post the serial number (approximate) we can tell you when it was made. Your rifle may have been rebarrelled, as that is where the model information is found.

Thanks for the info, the serial number is 723xxx and the barrel says: .300 Savage in one place, Savagage Arms Corporation Chicopee Falls Mass. USA on top of the barrel and on the other side it says: Hi-pressure steel - proof tested.
