Defense Shotgun

I am inquiring with the vast knowledge of this web board for their opinions on a defensive shotgun. It must be a pump style. I have read about Mossberg's and Benelli.

    The Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 seem to come up here as the top dogs.One guy who claimed to be an armorer for the US Military (it's the internet, so who knows...) said he never saw a single Remington 870 come in for repair, but had to switch to Mossberg's recently, with some coming in to him due to a component breaking.

    i like the remington 870 the best....planning on picking one up and tricking it out into a tactical shottie....i dont like the weight of the winchester 1300 (i have one) and dont like the safety on the mossberg.

    Thanks to all who replied, I have a 870, but the plug is permanent so i didn't want to disturb the original makings of this firearm.

    Brolin arms imports a spiffy chinese "ithaca style" (bottom load, bottom eject) pump 18"bbl 3" shells. Real nice furniture w/ a very short and stout action. All for $119 wholesale.Gun control means hitting your target!!

    Stay away from the Express models of the Remington 870. That is, if you are planning on shooting it alot. They cut alot of corners to provide a cheaper weapon. However, if you just want to keep it in the closet it should do just fine and is cheap compared to others.

    I own an 870, and although it's served me well in a hunting and general purpose role, I cant honestly see myself whipping that longbarrel around on an intruder in a hurry.If you're looking for a true home defense shotgun at a good price, Mossberg has a pretty extensive "Special Purpose" line of shotguns that Remington doesnt offer.The Model 500 short-barrel Persuader or even the .410 Home Security model (with the pistol grip pump handle and spreader choke) might be what you are looking for if you only plan on using it for home defense.On the other hand, if you can't sleep at night for fear that your traditional shotgun isnt maneuverable enough, and happen to have a Class III license, you could get a Mossberg 590A1 Cruiser, with no stock, a pistol grip, and a 14" barrel.Maybe a customized pump-action Franchi PA3/215? Can you say an 8.5" barrel?

    Dont forget there is the Mossburg Pre Ban BullPup shotgun. 31 inches over all. 21 inch barrel and chambered for 2 3/4 and 3 inch mag shells. 6 and 8 shot tubes if you can find one. My 2 cents

    Yeah, I like my Mossberg 500. I consider it one of the best shotgun values available. They are available all over for a reasonable cost and the gun shoots better than I do. The barrels are relatively inexpensive, widely available in assorted configurations, and are very easy to change. The plug is easy to remove and replace so that changing from defense to hunting and back only takes a minute or two. The standard magazine holds five 2-3/4" shells. It has a lightweight alloy frame that will handle magnum loads and the very desirable tang safety. Every accessory available for any shotgun is made for the Mossberg 500. What more can I ask for?

    Don't forget to look at the new Norinco Md 98. It's copied after the Rem 870. I bought one because it's short, 18 1/2" barrel, holds 5&1 and is chambered for 3" mag rounds. But what I like best is that it's steel as opposed to aluminum as I carry it in the trunk of my car. Did I mention that it's cheap?
