I just saw two what seem to be AK 47 with polymer/synthetic stocks. Engraved on the sides were "Verper made in russia". One was 223 cal for $650 and the other was a 308 cal for $750. Where do these two fall in the AK family. Are they higher quality than the MAK 90? Are these what some refer to as Saiga or Madie? Is this average pricing? Thanks folks!!

These are relatively new to the market. To date, the only distributor that I have seen advertise them is SOG (Southern Ohio Gun). They state that they are a high quality update made for Russian Special Forces and of high quality. This may be hype; but they look good enough that I ordered one to find out (not arrived yet). The Saiga is also Russian, but more of a hunting rifle in configuration, and the Maadi is an Egyptian-made AK variant which is at the lower end of the price range and is poor to adequate depending on who you are talking with. I'll probably catch some flack for this by AK fans, but the Mak-90 probably falls between the two in quality.[This message has been edited by Der Gebirgsjager (edited 11-12-2001).]

I've seen them they look like a fancy AK. Actually I think they are a RPK? I've seen one in 308 with a scope locally for $550.

"RPK" I wish I knew that acronym. The more I think about it, the more I wish I would have taken a closer look, it was impressive.Any one out there fired one?[This message has been edited by just-shoot (edited 11-13-2001).]

I have a friend who picked up the 7.62X39 a couple of weeks ago. Shoot real nice, the thing you first notice is it's a HEAVY rifle. The receiver stampings are twice the thickness of the regular AK stampings. Heavy barrel. Weighs considerably more than even the milled AK, it seems to me. It has an RPK style rear sight, with windage adjustment, but for some reason they only increment it to 300 meters. The .308 version runs about $50.00 more, and if you want it adapted to take M14/M1A 20 round mags, add another $100.00 onto that. They adapt it to take the M14 mags before they ship. I'm thinking the .308 adapted to M14 mags might be a good alternative to an FAL or HK91.
