keep ak-47 action open

Does anyone know if the action on an ak-47 (maadi) should or should not stay open when pulled back and up? JohnYes, that's what it does. Someone told me this is common when new, it should break in? Is that true or is there something I should fix? At the range I go to, you have to have the action open when not shooting..[This message has been edited by taxijohn (edited 11-13-2001).]

AK actions are not designed to stay open. There have been some safety levers that have a notch in them so you can pull back the cocking handle, put the safety on, and hold the bolt open. This is the only hold open I've ever seen for the AK. Sometimes the bolt will slow as it goes over the hammer. If your gun is new and stiff enough, it may stay open at that point, but any bump or touch and it will come forward.

When cleaning the bore of mine, I wedge the action open with a piece of empty brass in the ejection port. Just watch your fingers.

It's fairly easy to notch your selector(safety)lever yourself-a dremel tool is ideal, but you can do it with a file.
