Ruger Mini-14 Accuracy ?

I want to add a .223 semi-auto rifle to my small collection and have been told by several co-workers that the Ruger Mini-14 is not an accurate gun. I don't want to spend more than $600 and am open to suggestions.I do however prefer something made in America.I am not going to enter any long range competitions and 100 yard results are good enough for a home defence rifle, wouldn't you say?

rodgerglide, Do yourself a favor and look for a used bushmaster or something like that. The mini doesn't really shoot that well. I got one in s/s with the laminated stock. grapefruit at 100yds is average without handloads. Good enough to spray the scene with if it an urban type of setting you will defending in though.

I have a series 185 Mini 14 GB. At 300 yards it is accurate. I can hit the grapefruit with out any problems. Each rifle has its issues. I am very happy with mine at 300 yards. It is not a 600 or 500 yard rifle. Then agian I do not need it to be. My 2 cents.

I've owned 3 mini 14s and 5 or 6 AR15s. Ruger has a problem with accruacy. The best I could get out of a Mini-14 with gunsmith work and handloads was twice the size of a out of the box with factory ammo Ar15s group. The AR15 by bushmaster is as accurate as a bolt gun. Forget the mini save your money for an AR15.

The Min-14/30 was not designed for top accuracy. It WAS designed to be a totally reliable and robust rifle. The accuracy problem has nothing to do with Ruger or the manufacturing methods - the main factor is the gas piston design and the weight of the barrel. If you want 1 MOA accuracy, buy a top grade AR-15 (like Bushmaster or Armalite). If you want a 'battle rifle' that works even when muddy, wet, etc., the Mini-14, M1A and Garand are much better suited to those conditions.Myself, for a defensive rifle, I will always pick one that will feed anything, will work all the time for thousands of rounds without detailed cleaning, and can hit a man-sized object at 100 yards. (I also like .30 caliber rounds better then .22 cal. rounds). If my Garand is too heavy, then my Mini-30 will stand in its place.

Thanks for your input...save for AR seems way to go,although the new Ruger 44 Mag.Carbine has caught my eye...I wonder if Santa will let me get both? Decisions,decisions...maybe the new T.V. can wait...old one still works most of the time anyway...

For over 100 yards, spend more $$ and get an ar-15 or so. other that that, you can find a mini 14 froma dealer for about $475-$500 plus tax. I would not pay more that that, get the ranch style with a scope mount, and get a scope, you will love it..
