P O Ackley was an early smith and wildcatter extraordinaire. He usually decreased the taper on a case and blew the shoulder out at a more acute angle to increase the case capacity.Around 8%-14% improvement in capacity. They can be fired with factory cases to fireform the new cases. This is what Roy Weatherby did with the 300H&H to get his famous 300 Magcpermd

It also means that your .257 Ackley Improved will not take .257 Roberts ammunition. Ackley improved calibers are nice, but they are handloads. DO NOT use factory ammo of the right caliber in the Ackley Imporved rifle.

Uh,I believe that is incorrect. As far as I know all Ackley Improved cartridges can be fired with the factory round. It just fireforms the cases.Again,I am obviously slaving away here at work and will look in his book when I get home tonight.cpermd

cpermd you are correct. I have a 6.5-06 Ackley Imp and a 280 Ackley imp. The use of factory ammo is how you form the cases, that is if you don't handload. The ackley calibers are blown out cases usually with a 40 degree angle in the shoulder. This sharp angle greatly increases internal gas pressures which in turn create magnum velocities and performance from a non-belted case. Cloan, if you have aquired one of these rifles chambered for an Ackley caliber, do yourself a favor and experience the performance of this cartridge before you decide to change it. You will be impressed!!!I plan to build several more!!

Which Ackley caliber are you talking about? The .219 Ackley Improved Zipper in no way resembles the 219 Zipper that is dimensionally identical to the later .225 Winchester except for rim thickness. This Ackley caliber is best formed from the 30-30 case necked down to .22 and its' shoulder blown forward to a a sharp,I believe 42deg, shoulder. Trying to form from the .219 standard Zipper will split the cases.

I use 30-06 cases to form both calibers. Lapua (of course). I will also be experimenting with the 243 Ackley and I am toying with the idea of creating a 30-378 Ackley imp. Talk about horsepower!!!! Just call Redding and tell em what you want, the dies are cut and the reamer can be sent to the person who cuts your barrel. Now that eliminates all variables!!! Same reamer for dies and barrel.
