is a 30 carbine good for range?

I have a 30 carbine, shoots nice but I don't think these guns are made for the range? Short barrel and all, I think they were originally used by tank and truck drivers during the "wars". Not really made for far distance and accuracy. WHERE can i get a scope mount, do they work good? Let me know what you all think???

Actually, the M1 carbine was produced for men who had jobs that involved more than just combat-officers,communications(telephone linemen),demolitions, etc, that needed a light weapon, but wanted something with more firepower and range than a 1911A1.They're pretty accurate out to 100 yds-I'm able to outgroup SKSs and AKs at the range quite often with my Inland.A bunch of people ofer scope mounts-Cheaper than Dirt,Gun Parts are 2 I can think of right off,but why use a scope with a short-range weapon?Whatever makes you happy,I guess.

At the most it is a 100 yard gun.Unless you reload, it is not cheap to shoot.I got rid of mine and got one of the Ruger carbines in .40 cal. Both are pistol rounds and the Ruger comes with mounts and is cheaper to shoot.Have never seen scope mounts for the .30, but am sure they make them.

Hey rock, thanks for the history, interesting huh. well the problem is that without a scope, it's really hard to see a bullseye let alone see what you hit after each shot. When I asked this guy at a gun store if he carried scope mounts fir the m1, he looked at me like I had two heads. He said "that's not really a target gun" oh, I thought, considering this past weekend I was hitting within 4" of the bullseye without a scope. I do have binoculars, but for $25-$50 why not scope it, right? I also asked about a mini 14, again he looked at me like I was nuts, "go for a ar-15 or ak, longer barrel, better "twist""(in my hips?) he said. I don't know. Any other comments? Oh yeah, The ammo is not cheap, sellier goes for $10 for 50 rounds, not too bad. BUT I do get 1,00 rounds of 7.62 for $99 can't beat that.

I mounted a Leupold 2X extended eye relief scope on the rear of the barrel with a clamp mount (B-Square, I think). I only needed to ruin a handguard, and there was no damage to the gun from drilling and tapping.Neal

I see that CJC Enterprises (972-790-3686) has a scope mount, cost is $14.95 plus S@H.They also have 15rd. mag's for $12.95. Get the kind that slides into (replaces) your rear sight, it is a more solid mount. I would not get the one that clamps onto the receiver, they seem to loosen up. Also B-Square makes them, and there are another fine co.It is a fun gun to shoot. It is at best maybe a 100yd. rifle.

I think I'll start saving up for a ar-15, se they are $600-$1200 depending on a few things. I think I'll wait until the war is winding down. If we have another 911 incident, I think the price of guns will be higher...

Adding a bayonet will greatly extend the effective range.
