steel casing bad?

I have heard that rounds with a steel casing may be bad for your gun. I am planning on shooting it in 7.62x39 out of an ak. Is this just a bunch of blarney or what?

Steel is probably not harmful for bottleneck cases that headspace on the shoulder which includes almost all rifle cartridges. More important would be those brands that use steel jacketed bullets. A steel jacket would increase wear when compared to copper jackets. Just to be on the safe side I would not use steel cases in a caliber that headspaces on the rim such as 9mm, 40, 45, etc. The original ammo for the AK was steel cased and is probably not harmful.

oneshy is correct. 7.62X39 is Ok but stay away from the other calibers

Also, keep them clean. Most of them have lubricant on them which attracks dust and dirt. They are abrasive and will increase wear on the gun.

AKs are "designed" to digest steel cased rounds. So stop worrying and have fun.

I've never had any trouble. I've also used steel cases in 8mm Mauser with no trouble.

oneshy, your comment "I would not use steel cases in a caliber that headspaces on the rim such as 9mm, 40, 45 etc". You do mean case mouth and not rim don't you?

Yes, you're right. I didn't clarify that statement correctly.

I've fired thousands of steel-cased rounds through both my SKS and my AK with no apparent harm. The costs of that steel cased ammo is very low also.
