american bulldog

I admittedly know next to nothing about fireams, so I thought I'd send out this plea. I just came into posession of my deceased father's pistol that I remember getting a butt whipping over when I was around 8 years old. I found it in the house and he caught me playing with it. Even at that young age, I knew it was not operable, but I guess he wanted me to teach me a lesson about the dangers of firearms. The gun is an "American Bulldog" revolver. It is chrome with a 2 inch barrel. Looks to be a 38 caliber. I can find no other markings on it. The mechanisms are very sloppy, and pulling the trigger does nothing. It looks well used. For sentimental reasons, I would like to get it refurbished, but don't even know where to start looking for someone to do it, or if I can afford it even if I find someone. I live in the city of Chesapeake in southeastern VA. Does anyone know a reputable dealer/gunsmith in that area? Also, does anyone know anything about the manufacturer or the history of this gun? I know it was old in 1954, so it was probably manufactured a long time before that. Are there serial numbers, and if so, where can I find them?

Thanks, for any help.

I purchased a .38 caliber revolver with no markings except american bulldog on the top of the barrel. the hand grip has a picture of a bulldog on the sides, and the barrell has eight sides like a octagon. can anyone tell me more about this gun. I was told it was possibly S&W.
