Big scope ring problems

I just bought a new Ruger Mini 30 Ranch rifle. It comes with a set of factory Ruger rings. I mounted the base part on the rifle and started to lap the rings in. After 30 minutes and only 1/4 of the bottom making contract I cleaned the rings and layed the scope on the bases. The back (shows lapping) is great, the front on both rings shows a .010 gap on the bottom!! A ring problem, right? Or am I missing something.

can those rings be reversed? Sounds like they are leaning upward. Can you turn them 180 degrees and then see if the gap follows? Bob
I just looked at a set of them and it appears to me it would be very easy to "cock" that ring so it is not level/parallel to the bore. Try loosening them and applying pressure to hold them in the "tilt" you need as you tighten them. If the gap changes, then you got a lousey design. Bob
+1 on tsr1965, below is what I put on my Ruger.
before ...

Good luck!
