shooting blanks in an AK47

I have a friend who bought Russian made blanks in 7.62x39 to shoot in his AK47. The blanks will not cycle due to low pressures.I know they make an adapter for when you are firing blanks that I think fits on the muzzle of the rifle. Will this cause enough back pressure to cycle the blanks? I know their is a way to make them cycle because of the movies that are made using these rifles. Thanks.

Yes, the Blank Firing Adapter or BFA is designed to create back pressure to cycle the action. Thats what it was made for. The BFA simulates the approximate back pressure that a bullet traveling down the bore would create thus cycling the action.

Actually the blanks not cycling the action is not due to their being too low pressure, its due to there being no "resistance" in the barrel to create back-pressure going into the gas piston above the barrel.

Lefty, Thanks for you quick response! I thought that was it, but I had never tried blanks. Thanks and I will try and find an adapter for him.

Fortuntately for you, not only are these readily available, but they're also pretty cheap to boot:

Note of caution- Even with a blank firing attachment, blanks can cause death or serious injury at point blank range. There is a lot of gas pressure being vented out of the BFA. Have also seen a LOT of BFAs that were not properly attached become projectiles.

PS-- for the movies, many of those guns are rebarreled to a constricted bore that will not fire ball ammo, but will channel enough gas to the piston to make it cycle- that way no BFA is visible in the movie.

Found this post on Google so you know I?ve been looking but no luck so far!

Need a blank adapter for a NON THREADED barrel AK47, is there such a critter? All I?m finding is for threaded barrels.

This is the only thing that will work for you. Your going to have to drill 4 holes in the barrel. In line with the screws. So that it would be secured. Than JB Weld, the adapter and screws before final assembly. To have any hope that it will stay attached to the barrel. If rapid firing.

Wouldn't take much to make one as long as there is something sturdy at front to anchor it to such as a sight/base. A chunk of channel notched at one end for the barrel and a 3/8" brass screw or bolt threaded in the other end to plug off part of the barrel by having the end filed into a triangular shape.

The blanks may contain black powder so make certain you clean the AK47 like you would a black powder muzzle loader - lots of hot soapy water moped back and forth then thoroughly air dry before cleaning the usual way. The wads in blanks have killed people - wad punched holes through their skulls.
