Winchester 94 30 30

My son has a old 1906 1894 Winchester 30-30 Carbine that is a little on the rough side. When the gun is cycled with out a round in it the gun operates as it should and locks up good. Put a round in it and it will cycle the rounds into the chamber but the lever just falls down, does not lock in place. What would be the most likely part to cause this problem.

sounds like it has to do with the carrier, I would open the action and use wd40 to spray clean all the internals and work the action sharply several times then spray clean again and work it then wipe clean and apply a spray lube lightly and wipe excess and try to see if that clears up the issue, if not inspect for wear damage.

Something(s) is likely worn. Take it apart and inspect

added Try some different brand of ammo. Have you taken it apart and cleaned it plus looked for wear on pins or oblong holes.

Clean the chamber. Shell is not going in all the way.

When closing the lever, does the locking bolt rise all the way up flush with the top of the receiver? It has to to lock the action. Are you 100% sure it is chambered for the ammo you are trying to use?

The locking bolt is coming up all the way with a round in it but it makes sense if the gun locks up good without a round in it and stays locked but will not stay locked up with a round in it something is wrong with getting the round fully into the chamber.

Take a close look at the Extractor-it might not be fully engaging the rim on the case..Also check that it's fully seating in the barrels extractor cut..If the extractor is too high, the bolt cannot completely close..

has he tried to fire any of the chambered rounds to see if it will fire while the lever is not staying in place ?
