Tom- check out jpar15.com - it's JP Enterprise's web page. They have the JP comp. Friend of mine shot a .308 that had one and he said it was like shooting a .223 without any muzzle rise. He said it was great.

Tom, I have a Ruger 77 MKII in .338 Win Mag, stainless, synthetic stock, with sights. I've had a lot done to mine, to include having it mag-na-ported. The recoil is less than my Remington 7600 in 30-06 cal. with an 18" bbl. length. I shoot pretty hot handloads through it, and its still so sweet to shoot with the mag-na-porting job on it. You may notice its a little louder, but you should use hearing protection any way, when shooting at the range, of course. I think it has less recoil than a 12 ga with slugs, too. I also installed a Decelerator recoil pad from Pachmayr, but I hate to tell you this, the adaptor that is provided with the pad isnt worth a @#$!. I made my own adapter and it looks factory unless youre looking for it. So you can tell I'm in love with my Ruger huh? Anyway, check this out, www.magnaport.com It cost me about 125.00 for this and its nice to look at, too, no added weight, and doesnt affect the sights. HAEDPULLER, SSgt Ryan E. Roberts, USMCTHANKS FOR REPLYS. THE JP COMP IS MORE RADICAL THAN I PREFER ALTHOUGH I KNOW IT WORKS ON THE .50 CAL RIFLES.ON MAGNA-PORT, I HAVE SEVERAL SINGLE ACTIONS AND A COUPLE OF P-13s PORTED - REALLY A HELP ON 41, 44, AND HOT 45LC (RUGERS) SGT. ROBERTS, WAS YOURS A 2 OR 4 PORT JOB? LOOKS LIKE THE MAGA BRAKE WOULD BE GREAT BUT APPARENTLY WON'T WORK WITH FRONT SITE???? I HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT TRYING TO GET SOMEONE TO BACKBORE AND EDM SOME HOLES BUT WOULD GUESS THE ANGLE AND SIZE OF THE HOLES ARE A PART OF THE SECRET HOW MUCH DOES THE DECELARATOR PAD CONTRIBUTE IN YOUR ESTIMATION?? OBJECTIVE IS TO GET THE 338 DOWN TO 270 WIN OR (DREAM ON) 6MM REM RANGE. AGAIN THANKS FOR INPUT GUYS TOM B

Tom, I had the 4 port job done on mine. I believe if you want the magna brake put on that they remove the front sight and thread the barrel, and then reinstall the sight, but I cant remember, although I did ask this question of them. As far as the recoil pad goes, I believe it contributes greatly, but its hard to assign a percentage to it. I can tell you that even after the magnaporting, that that worthless pad that came with it would put its linear imprint in my shoulder when wearing a t-shirt, afterwards, it was so much better I had to smile at the first shot, but again, that spacer that comes with the decelerator, at least the one I received, was worthless, so buyer beware. The imprint was just an imprint though, no bruising, as I would have expected from firing from the bench without the magnaporting. The brake cost about 50.00 more than the porting, and that was why I didnt really want it, I'm still practical, and it does create more noise at the muzzle, as well as create a dust storm if firing over dirt, with the brake that goes all the way around the barrel, so again, I got the porting. If you have a wooden stock, I'd say to check into the hydraulic dampening type of recoil dampeners.

Tom, the fitting of the decelerator was easy and straight forward, the problem is that the screws on the ruger recoil pad are not a standard distance apart like most recoil pads. So there is a spacer that the decelerator comes with which is screwed into the rugers screw holes and then you screw the decelerator pad (via machine type screws, if I remember correctly) into the spacer to finish the job. When I tried to put the pad on the spacer via the machine screws, the brass nuts, which are imbedded into the spacer, much like grips estucheons on a revolver, twisted free, and you now have a screw spinning its nut, and a loose pad. On top of that, the spacer had a gap between the butt stock and itself. My recommendation: Try the decellerator, but be mindful of what to watch for, and super glue the brass nut plates into their recess before attempting to attach the pad, just to ensure that they dont spin upon attempting to tighten the machine screws.

Remember that porting the barrel will cost you some in velocity and energy, because you have in effect shortened the barrel. It will not cost as much as actually shorting the barrel, but does cost some, perhaps 50-100 fps.The comp added to the end of the barrel does not effectively reduce barrel length. both will elevate noise levels to the painful.
