Rifle looks similar to a Vetterli, I guess.....Bolt action, about 34" barrel, magazine fed?(none with it), bayonet lug on rt side of barrel, sight has "grooves" on rt side of support to hold sight in selected elevation, has "TORINO" in oval, "1878", "AG75xx" on receiver.....Also some kind of acceptance marks(?)Where might a magazine be purchased?Thanks.....John

Captain....Thanks much for your reply.....I'm sorry, I don't have picture capablility.....Standard Catalog of Firearms shows the Gras Model 1874 as 11mm...The muzzle of this one measures about 6.5mm.....There is a "housing" forward of the trigger guard that looks similar to a Moison....A slot .56"x1.25" is in the rear for the magazine....Rifle is 52.5" overall..Anywhere I can see a picture of a Gras?

I don't have a stripper clip but the caliber is 6.5 carcano if that helps

You may have an Italian Vetterli-Vitali, Model 1870/87/16, 6.5mm conversion. You can see a photo of the rifle on page 245 of "Rifles of the World" 2nd Edition. The photo plainly shows the Carcano-type grooves you mentioned on the rear sight. If you don't have access to the book and will post your address or e-mail address I'll send you a copy of the page. Then you would know what the magazine you're looking for looks like. As for finding the magazine, you'll likely have to do a lot of phoning and it may be expensive. Sometimes the best way to locate this type of item is to advertise and let it come to you.

I'll betcha that "Der Geb." is right. I thought the last date in the model no. should be "15".It is most likely an official arsenal conversion of the 10.4mm single shot rifle,...converted to 10.4mm box magazine repeater,...converted to another box mag. (different) 6.5mm repeater. Not a different barrel, but, a re-lined insert.Look reeeeal close and you might see it. You wouldn't know it on most.Bob

UPDATE ON I.D. SEARCH.....Looks like Der and gunboob are correct....Did some searching on the 'Net and found.. http://www.qnet.com/~jrprts/italvetcompcopy.jpg.....This look just like the one I have....Does having a "box magazine" mean it does not use a magazine? Has a lever that appears to latch/unlatch one.....Thanks......

I don't know what that "lever" you're talking about means, as I currently don't have a specimen of the 6.5 version at hand,I just crawled up on my wall to re-examine my 10.4mm varsions, and, I don't see anything on them either.Either way,(let me make a bold statement here.)...I don't believe ANY Italian magazines were to be removed, but, rather always charged from strippers, and/or, en bloc attachments, depending on particular model.I have 8 different 10.4 models, 3 of which have magazine/repeater features, and none are removable. All 6.5 conversion models should have the same aspects.I may remember a small knurled protrusion somewhere on a 6.5, but I expect it is for floorplate removal.Hope this helps.Bob

Very good, Bob.....I appreciate all your help...Maybe it's a floor plate that's missing....If you look at the site in my last post (sorry I got the "....This" in the URL),the top & bottom pictures, at the upper rear of the housing ahead of the trigger guard, there is a lever/latch/catch shown, pivoted off the screw shown there also. I MUST get a digital camera! Thanks....John
