Inherited handguns

My Grandfather recently passed away and I inherited two old S&W revolvers from him. Neither one has a model number and I am not sure how to go about gathering information on them. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Swing the cylinder out and look where the thing hinges. That should give the model number.

Also check under the grips for older revolvers.

Both of these revolvers hinge in the middle where the barrel meets teh cylinder. I removed the grips and looked around where the cylinder hinges up but can find nothing. The patent dates are in the 1800's and both serial numbers on the butt are fairly low. One has a hammer and the other one does not. The one with the hammer has a spur that acts as the firing pin. Any more suggestions?

S&W didn't begin assigning numbers until 1958. Prior to this time they had names assigned, such as Hand Ejector, Kit Gun or Victory. This name wasn't stamped on them.Your best bet is to describe them in great detail (caliber, frame sizes, partial serial, etc.) and people here can make their best guesses.[This message has been edited by Txs (edited 11-26-2001).]
