I'm looking to get myself .40 S&W semi-auto hand gun, full version for better target shooting and self-defense. Not sure , which gun is better overall, Sig P226 or Beretta 96G Elite II. Price wise Sig P226 (blackened stainless) and Beretta 96G Elite II are about the same. I would appreciate a feedback and an advice. Thanks so much!

Dont forget to take a look at H & K USP (mine is in the compact version). Dont know how the price compares but I put an Optima red dot scope on it and is is way more accurate than I can hold on a benchrest at 25 yds. I love the feel and like the decocking feature. ( As I think the Sig does have also). All would be excellent firearms but I like the feel of my H&K over my P228.

I have both the 96 Elite II and the HK USP 40. Both Extremely accurate out of the box. The HK is a Poly gun, while the Berreta is alloy. Have not shot the Sig.Best Bet, Find a range in your area that rents guns and try fo fire each of them!

You'll have to look it up but there's a indoor range in Oceanside that rents guns. Call The Stockade in Westminster and maybe they know of somewhere closer.

In Gun Test Mag. I've seen almost every Sig model compared to almost every model of their competitors and they are rated Superior in almost every case. The Glocks seem to be the only pistol that can give them a run for the money, and they often lose.

One thing to look for in both of these firearms is the difference in balance. The Beretta seems to be lighter in the nose than almost every auto in the market. Also, they are more prone to malfunction when subjected to extremely gritty environments, nothing a regular cleaning wont cure. Both handguns have a good reputation and everyone has their own distinct opinion about them. Before you decide on which is better than the other, go to a local shop and have both firearms in front of you and hold them both. Get the one that feels like an extension of your arm because accuracy as far as tests go are just that....numbers on a piece of paper and hold no true weight on the operators capability. Good Luck,-smoothBTW, HK's are great too...got one in 40c.

The Beretta is a good pistol, but the SIG fits my hand better. I like the SIG 229 in .40 caliber myself. Both are excellent pistols, and will give two or three lifetimes of service. Get the one you like better.

The Sig and the Beretta are both good guns. You can't really go wrong with either one. The same goes for the other guns mentioned so far. But there's enough difference in the configurations of the guns mentioned that I think you'll find that you inherently like one gun better than the other(s). The way it fits your hand, balance, type of action, even the looks are all considerations that will effect your preference for a certain model. I'd suggest that you head off to a couple of gunshops and at least handle each of the models you're interested in. One model will probably leap out as your choice. We can talk all day about which guns we think are best but ultimately you have to get the gun that makes you happy.Tom
