Caring for antiques

My father-in-law has a number of old Winchesters, one of which is a model 73 1 of 1,000. He doesn't pay any attention to them-the only care they get is a light coat of oil on the exterior and down the barrel when I go home once a year. What else should be done?

The worse enemies of firearms are thieves and rust. They should be kept locked in a steel safe, with either a safe anti-rust lamp or a container of silica gel that gets dried out on a regular basis.Neal

Actually, if that is a bonafide 1 of 1000 Model 1873 it is a significant multi-thousand (5-digits) dollar investment and deserves careful attention to condition and deterioration.
