Muzzle brakes.

I have never had the need for one but, now I think it would be a good idea. After many shots with the .243, my shoulder aches- most likely due to age. I talked to my gunsmith and he has two types. The first will do a good job but the noise to the side is, as he says, deafning. The second choice works well and also muffles the noise. My questions are; Do these brakes affect accuracy? Will the brake that muffles the noise be considered a type of silencer, making it illegal? I'm sure the latter would not apply, since it would be done by a smith. I know a .243 doesn't kick much, but, shooting with less recoil may make fireing 20 to 40 rounds a little more bearable. I thank you for any info.

IF PROPERLY INSTALLED A MUZZEL BRAKE SHOULN'T AFFECT ACCURACY (OR SHOULD I SAY PRECISION?) OF THE RIFLE. THE NOISE REDUCTION REFFERS TO THE 'SIDE BLAST' SOME BRAKES PRODUCE, IT WILL STILL GO BANG.

Every time I ever "improved" a gun, I lowered the value. Cabela's sells slip-on recoil pads that might be all you need, and for a lot less money.Neal

Midway has "PAST" recoil shields. My wife actually bought me some gun stuff last Christmas and this was one thing that I really liked. I tend to shoot a lot of rifles for a lot of people before hunting season and sometimes I would ache for days. This thing works!! Bring on the 300's and the 338's!! The item number in the Midway catalog is 284-105 and it sells for 29.99. Your shooting buddies will like you better if you don't use that infernal ear busting muzzlebrake.

You can't get something for nothing. A brake may reduce recoil; but it will increase noise and side blast. You will not make friends with those along side of you at the range. I agree that your best bet is the slip-on pad.good luck, be carefulMorty

side blast... if the guys on either side of me are not wearing hearing protection they should not be on the range! what about those people that shoot h&h 375 and up along side me??? thoses things boom too!I invested in a custom rifle at 1100.00. which included a muzzel brake. reduced recoil is like shooting a .223.. it is a .243. I also get 5 shot one hole groups.real improvements done by competent guns smiths will improve values.... I vote for the brake done correctly.
