I can recommend you find a couple books by Jerry Kuhnhausen. 1911 Volumes 1 & 2Great info, well articulated and as much fun as you want to have!Happy building!

You need a copy of Layne Simpson's "The Custom (1911 Auto) Government Model Pistol", available from Brownell's, 641-623-4000, as Item # 968-045-000 for $26.95. You should also ask for a copy of Brownell's catalog which has a wide selection of custom parts. Jerry Kuhnhausen's "The Colt .45 Automatic-A Shop Manual", Item #924-200-045 at $24.95 is also nice to have; but given the choice of only one I'd take Simpson's book.
