Carbon 15-97 & 97s

What can anyone tell me about these rifles? Are they comparable to what? I like the idea of the less than 5 lbs weight. How accurate are they and why were they developed? Does any agency use them? Thanks for any and all information.[This message has been edited by gap1916 (edited 01-21-2002).]

    They are not noted for reliability and they don't use GI parts.That is the nicest thing I can say on a public forum.cpermd

    I can't speak for the rifles, but I own one of the pistols and am VERY pleased with it. The composite graphite material used in the construction will outlast aluminum many times over and is self lubricating as well. I say this because I inspect aircraft built of the same stuff. Very damage resistant. The pistol is very accurate and doesn't jam. But I don't put over 300 rounds through it between cleanings, that's about all I care to shoot it in any one session.Besides the lack of wear on the composite materials, I believe one reason they went with graphite was to get around the 50 oz weight limit on pistols. If a pistol that takes detatchable magazines weighs over 50 oz, it is considered an assault weapon and was banned in 1994. By using the light weight material, they dropped the weight below the 50 oz. limit on the pistols.I have heard the early models had a reputation for jamming and being unreliable. I think they solved that problem, everyone I've heard talk about the later ones is very pleased with it. I would stick with a newer model if I bought another. They are introducing a pistol version in 7.62X39 this month (after advertizing it a while). I plan on getting one of those, I like mine so much.

    My wife's cousin has a Carbon 15 pistol and it jams alot. Even after he sent it back to the manufacturer, it still jams. I assume it is one of the older ones, as I have heard of them having this problem before. Just out of curiosity, how would you tell a new one from an old one that jams?-Marcus

    I am not sure on how to identify the new pistals. The rifles are designated with a (s) ie 97s.

    I own a Carbon 15, type 97 and am very well pleased with the rifle. Installed a Holo-Sight on mine, NICE........

    boeboe has this pretty well nailed. My type 97 is a gem. I put a inexpensive red dot on it (the factory mount was a little expensive) and have no complaints. Not to pick (and don't hang me on this guys) but the 50 oz thing is a big deal to excape from the assault ban. But the thing is - a mag. OUTSIDE of the grip. This lets them legally use an AR mag. Practical? Well probably not. Unique? You bet, and that's a big deal to me.

    My dealer says they are very accurate,very well-made.I dunno...never been very impressed with the Stoner design-most of the ones I see at the range jam often(ARs-haven't seen a Carbon-15 yet),notice they don't have a forward assist,though.
