The .22 Long and .22 Long Rifle are often thought of as the same cartridge, but they are not and may not be interchangeable, depending on the firearm. The .22 Long uses a .22 Long Rifle case (.595 in), but is loaded with a .22 Short bullet (29 gr.). The overall length of a .22 Long is .880 in, while the .22 Long Rifle is .975 inches long. Try shooting .22 Long out of a firearm designed to shoot only .22 LR and you will quickly understand the difference. The 22LongRifle can damage rifles made for long only.

I had an old single shot Chanbered for Long only and i fired about 50 rounds of Long Rifle through the gun. The gun was made by the Hamilton Gun comp. It damaged the bolt at it no longer would chamber rounds right i took it to my local gunsmith and he told me the long rifle round has higher vel. and that's what damaged the gun. If this info is wrong i am sorry i am just telling u what i was told by someone who i trust. i still have the single shot 22 and i will sell it to u for 25.00 if u want to see it.

The 22long is an older, lower powered cartridge predating the 22long rifle. Many spur trigger single shot pistols, revolvers and cheap rifles were made for this old black powder cartridge. Modern smokeless 22 long loadings used to be available in standard and high velocity but it is not advisable to use the high speed smokeless loads in these old guns. The 22long rifle even in its' lightest loading is higher pressure than the22long and will bulge the chambers of many of the old guns that were built for black powder.
