I never heard of an Automaster. The Remington 870 Wingmaster is about as good as they get in a pump shotgun. Same goes for the Express and the Magnum. Sturdy as an anvil and easy to swap parts and accessorize.

I believe that it is the model 878 the economy version of the sportsman 58, remingtons first gas operated shotgun and the predecessor to the 1100. 100% cond is worth $235 and 90% around $170,these are good shooting guns, the only downfall being the magazine only holds two shells since it has an internal gas system forward of the magazine, and I dont think that the 870 barrel will interchange, the only one that will is the sportsman 58 barell, hope this helps...[This message has been edited by sig-man (edited 01-22-2002).]

SIG,Only 2 shells? My 58 holds three 2 3/4".Always worked for me cause there's no need to plug it for ducks.(got it new in '56)Still a good gun as long as you use quality ammo.THe old gas system doesn't like reloads much.Kinda turns it into a single shot auto if you know what I mean. No BEE the 870 barrel is not interchangeable. The 878 needs the gas ports at the forward ring to work.

should be a good trick, making a pump gun barrel work on a semi-auto action. but if it can be done you should be able to do it. let us know how its works out. good luck, john

The barrel is a 870 barrel with gas ports under the forward ring,as pops said.....that is the only difference. The thing that is eatin at me is I have a 20" Rifle sighted 870 barrel that takes screw in chokes..this would make a very versitile little gun, that way.But I would have to drill gas ports in the barrel,to make it work. The gun comes with 3 barrels as it is..and like I said, the price is right!I`ll probably just buy it,and not alter my slug barrel, just put it on one of my wingmasters instead, but yeah,I know it would have worked..218

POPS, I have sportsman 58's and the magazine only holds two with one in the chamber that makes three. the 878 automaster is the economy version of the sportsman 58 series the way I understand it.My 58's have a gas adjustment for light and heavy loads on the barrel cap, and all you have to do is move the dial to L for light or H for heavy...[This message has been edited by sig-man (edited 01-23-2002).]

Same gun. I wasn't thinking of just the mag holding 2. I was thlking 3 all together. Sorry. Over the years, the "H" has been pretty much all you can use on mine.I think that low brass now is equal to high brass in the 50's, or age is taking over.Still a great gun. My dad bought it in the summer of 56, And died in Dec. of same.He got quite a few pheasant, and a doe with it that season. It'll stay with me always.

They are slick little guns my four year old daughter shoots at clay birds with the 20 gauge model and my wife shoots the sixteen guage...

Had less trouble with it than 1100's. Somebody shoulda told Remington 'If it works, don't fix it'. If mine had a vent rib, I'd use it for clays.
