A friend of mine called me last night to help him ID -6- old S&W 38's he picked up from an Old Timer cleaning house. For the most part they are not in good shape. The S/N#'s range from 32,000 - 817,000. One is nickel, the rest blue, 4 have the maltese cross before and after the caliber. Four have 4" barrels, one is a 6", and one a 3.5"?, all fixed sights. He wants to sell them at the gun show this weekend but does not know what to ask. He aslo is considering reblueing or re nickeling them to increase value. I said he should leave them as is as a general rule for older guns. The are mostly 1st change, 2nd change, 3rd change, etc, guns. I valued them at approximately $75 - $150 each; am I too far off? I told him to put them on the table at $150 each and go from there. There are a couple that I'm not to sure about. One has a 'V' before the serial number of 32###, anything special? One has 'England' on the cylinder and has crown proof marks, anything special there? And one has a hair less than a 4" barrel with tall serrated ramp front sight, a lanyard and Converted by Cogswell & Harrison Ltd London written on the side, anything special?Your assistance is appreciated.Roy
