I purchased a MAK-90. It has a threaded barrel. On the basis that it has a thread barrel dose this mean that it is a PRE-BAN?I have been told that it is.

Several MAK-90s were held up at the docks because they had threaded barrels. To allow their import, the ATF required that they have the thread protector spot welded on. There was a small area of weld added on the bottom of the barrel to affix the thread protector. After they got in, some enterprizing new owners carefully removed the weld via filing to have access to the threads, which was illegal.MAK-90 means "Modified AK 1990" and those modifications were made to make them legal for the 1989 ban on AKs. There is no such thing as a "pre-ban" MAK-90 because by definition they were made after the 1989 ban. Chances are VERY high that you have one that has had the weld removed from the barrel, exposing the threads. The other significant ban was 1994. At that time, all MAK-90's became illegal to import. So in that respect, all MAK-90s are "pre-ban".[This message has been edited by boeboe (edited 01-25-2002).]

boeboe,I thought the Clinton excutive order of '97 is what stopped the flow of thumbhole type AK's and simular types such as the Steyr USR, wasn't the '94 ban pertained to US made guns???

Hey Kimberkid,You know, there have been so many bans by Clinton executive order and legislations I wouldn't swear to the date, but did find the following page which indicates there were no MAK-90's after 1994. It also affirms the status of the MAK-90. The page is: http://kalashnikov.guns.ru/wwwboard/board5/messages/4250.html While I have your interest, I was wondering if you set-up at Topeka shows. The reason I ask is because a friend of mine and I were thinking about setting up in Topeka this weekend, but only wanted to set up one day, which is frowned upon. I was thinking for a future show, if we got tables next to you, we would set-up Saturday and let you have our tables Sunday, if you could spread yourself out that much. Drop me a message at gareynolds47@hotmail.com if you would be interested in some free table space on Sunday for a future show.
