A family member, has given me his S&W 640 .38 Spl. only. The gun has a custom action & has been ported. I would like to know what you think a good ammo is for carry & home? I usually carry a Sig .4O S&W 155 grn. JHP.

My preference would be a pre-fragmented bullet as made by Cor-Bon or Glaser. They minimize risk of damage to innocent civilians in the line of fire.Neal

It depends on who will handle the gun, but an excellent choice is 38 spl.+P 125 gr. JHP. Winchester or Remington both make an excellent round in this load. This load is rather hot for a small gun but with practice you will learn to handle very well.

If you really want some unbelivable stopping power in .38 special loads, check out ...www.rbcd.netI've shot this ammo in 9mm and .45acp. The velocity/foot lbs. ratio is awesome. It is now my concealed carry ammo for all my handguns. Good Luck.Tidemanp.s. This stuff is the fastest handgun ammo in the world.

158gr. HP lead +P has best history for effectiveness out of 2" barrels.

Saxon, I thought the famed "treasury load" was the 110 gr. JHP+p+ . And the "FBI" load was the 158 gr. lswchp+p.And you are correct about 2" velocities not being high enough to open up a jacket. They really seem to drop from a 4" barrel.

First choice - carry the .40! Second - soft lead bullet out of a 2" barrel, preferably in HP config.Saxon, the Treasury (aka Secret Service) load is 110gr HP - I have a box I picked up many years ago w/ a 1974 headstamp.
