Take a look at the Wind River line, by Leupold. They are in your price range. I have a pair in 8x42, and like them better than either my Pentax or Burris.

Wittum here are the facts: As with most things you get what you pay for. This is perhaps especially true in optics. That said, it is also true that today you can get better optics in the mid price range than you could buy for any price even 25 years ago. this is largely because of the lens coatings. The best optics including binos will be fully multi-coated. That is they will have multiple lens coating at each air/glass interface. These coatings reduce reflections and refractions which occur within the binocular or scope at each glass surface. So the Pentax binos mentioned at $160 will be better than $500 binos from 1978. I would encourage you to save a bit longer and buy some binoculars in the $400-$500 range if possible. Then you will have binos that will last a lifetime without you getting frustrated at the limitations of inexpensive binos and deciding to replace them in 5 years. A couple of places to help you get the most for whatever money you decide to spend: www.bearbasin.com and www.eagleoptics.com Do check out the Eagle Optics Rangers- the roof prism binos are an exceptional value for under $400, performing as well as binos that cost over $600. I use a pair as my hunting binoculars.

I just picked up a pair of pentax 16x60's that sell for 249.00 for 160.00 on ebay. It was a camera shop in N.Y. I use them on a tripod for spotting, I have a pair of leica 8x32's for stalking, they are unsurpassed for clarity but a bit spendy. Two of my hunting buddies have pentax and for the $$$ you can't beat them.Rich
