Ar-15 varmint build up consult

Ok! I have succumbed! I ask this question in knowledge it has been ask in various form several times. But as changes occur rapidly, and I am making a commitment to this project all advise will be considered. That said - I want to build MY ultimate AR-15.The goal is a sweet Varmint oriented AR.I am thinking DPMS Stainless flat top receiver with a 24 or 26 inch barrel - cryoed and fluted. Glass sights with a bipod mount. Rules are:Weight is not a factor, but tractors to haul it wont work eitherHigh-speed fire is not likely,Accuracy is supremeI am willing to spend a tad over a grand total and I hope most special tools will fall into that budget. Yes I know there are production units available for nearly the same money but I am confident I can do better with guidance. I will make my decisions and purchases bases on the guidance of the knowledgeable and helpful pros that read and contribute to the betterment of the sport.I will add I am a journeyman machinist, passable welder and winning engine builder so reading blue prints, precision measuring equipment etc. is not a problem, in addition I do reload and have the needed equipment - when we get that far; and I am pretty sure I can contribute the necessary devotion and skill to achieve a worthy projectAnd away we go =What book (books) specifically do I need?Is the DPMS stainless receiver the right choice? And seeing as I will need to order the barrel ASAP - From who? What material? Outside diameter? and twist? (Hollow point bullets may be in its future)I know enough from my racing engines to know I am willing to step up to the plate for fluting, stress relieving and Cryogenic treatment.Do I get the upper receiver from the barrel supplier? If not, next choice-Small parts? One stop shopping or pieces?Any definite to avoid? Thanks in advance and I will appreciate all input.

I would ignore the lower and material as far as accuracy is concerned on an AR.A nice Jewell or JP trigger is very important though. The very best factory barrel for accuracy is the Oly SUM in 1/8 or 1/10 twist. The only better barrels are pure customs. You can put a very nice lower with a Jewell trigger for $390The Oly Upper would be around $550 with BCH.Check out the AR15 or High Power boards.cpermd@centurytel.net

I think the 1 turn in 8" will handle the bigger bullets better. Krieger barrels may be the best but Olympic has a good reputation.Pose your question on www.ar15.com

I too am concidering building another AR varmint gun. Although its not a stressed part, I really like the re-inforced Socom AR recievers for a total custom look, they are avaiable through Brownells in anodized red, blue, silver & black (I want the red), then the JP Enterpeise Competition upper. Upper reciever is the DPMS high-pro reinforced flat top with red anodized releif cuts at the rear of the reciever. JP makes their own barrels which are .875" dia. 24", 1 in 8, cryoed Stainless (flutting would look cool on them) Then add a red anodized heat riser under the venelated Free Float Handguard (which is 17" and extends over the gas block) ... Brownells also has some interesting laminated thumbhole stocks for the extra "trick" look and from what I hear the Jewel trigger is the way to go, then top it off with Leupold or Sheppard glass.Unfortunately, the total projected cost is closer to $2500 ...Its not very good but here is a pic of a 100 yd target I shot with peep sights with a JP Match upper: [ctr] [/ctr]

I tryed to get a really accurate AR but the olympic arms bull barrel simply would not dowhat I wanted it to. I was referred to a police sniper who sell rockriver at a very decent price. I bought an upper for about 500 dollars and put it on my lower. I can get 1/2 inch at 100 yards. His name and info is as follows www.sableco.com dprisp223@cs.comHis name is Donnie Pridemorephone # is 1 309 4963030If you are interesteds, tell him I sent you. Maybe the guy would give me a break if I need anything else. But that is not the issue. I am extremely satisfied with the rock river and its performance.I also put a jewel trigger on mine.Nice.Eric
