Do any of these (not just 1864's) have barrel band keepers? or do only the springfields and other contracters?

The musket that you are asking about is known as the Colt Model 1861 Special Musket. The date 1864 that appears behind the hammer is the date of manufacture NOT the model. The bolster is different then the standard Model 1861 by being flat with an eagle stamped on it rather then haveing a clean out screw in it. The hammer has a different shape which was later incorporated into the Springfield Model 1863 Type I. Also incorporated was the lack of barrel band springs. The barrel bands used a screw to clamp the barrel to the stock. In field service this proved to be unsuitable and the Model 1863 Type II musket brought back the band springs. The Colt Special Musket was an attempt to simplify musket production in order to speed it up.
About 75000 Colt Special Muskets were produced and most were issued to State troops and many will be found with State markings.
Hope that this is of some help to you.

Ah! someone who knows... Thank you! are you ready for more? since yester day I have dug a bit deeper.

Here's what I have: Colt 3 band, flat bolster, has (I think "ERP" stamped on rear of barrel where "steel" normaly is. It only has two spots for barrel band springs, middle and muzzle. It is'nt inlet for the breech end one. discovered it has a two piece stock, cut under the breech end band. It has a small notch for the front portion of the stock to fit into the rear. rifling gone....I'm thinking it was made into someone's "shotgun" and somewhere along the way was put back into it's semi-original configuration.

has a 1/8 brass pin flush with the stock in the corner formed by the buttplate on the lock side. Also crudly carved into the buttstock near the comb, "P. E. 6" or "G". Proffesionaly carved just oposite of the lock is "H J No .... then a small cut out portion where the "No." was.

so... what can ya tell me based on all this?
