I have a friend that says he has come across a .45cal pistol made by S&W. He states the seller says it was produced during WWII and that it is a 1911 style pistol. I have not seen the pistol, so I am relaying 2nd hand info.

and value? rare? not rare?

serial number
552xx

Smith makes plenty of 1911 pistols, with production starting in 1992 or 1993 (I forget).

So far as I know they never made any during WWII.

    S&W currently makes a 1911 pistol, the SW1911.

But, for the military? Never. However, they did sell some replacement barrels for the M1911/M1911A1 to DOD. Your friend is just confused. My SWAG is that he is looking at an Armcorp of the Phillipines gun.

    Neal

EDIT: As M1911 production began at 856561, the SN tells me he does not have a USGI pistol. Of course, the receiver IS the gun, & many 1911's have the manufacturers name on the slide, not the receiver. So, your friend really could have anything, but not a USGI 1911.
EDIT: Ooops, my mistake! This happens when you get careless; I was looking at my WWII production list. Yes, the SN given certainly could be a Colt 1912 pistol. Or, it could be anything else.

Neal, he is not a gun guy, so trying to ask him questions about specific details is quite difficult.

he states the gun is somewhere around 70yrs old. The seller was given the gun by his father some years ago, and it was old then.

what does the serial number tell you??

I thought perhaps it was Smith Corona, but it is NOT....There were a lot of manufacturers contracted by colt...Ithica, Remington Rand, ect.

If he is not a gun guy, perhaps it is a revolver and he thinks it is a 1911?

I am going to try to look at it myself, but now he says the seller is having second thoughts.

A true 1911 No 55200 was made by Colt in 1913.
As said, S&W made replacement barrels at one time. I recall Gil Hebard selling them for $6.00 in the 1960s.

    I don't understand nmyers, No 856561 is a Colt 1911A1 made in 1942; 1911 production began at No 1 in late 1911, delivered Jan 4, 1912 according to www.coolgunsite.com
