What is the difference if any between a model 1897 and 1898 pump shotgun? The last patent date on mine is 2 June 1896.

There are tons of information on this site on the 1898 Marlin shotgun do a search. If you read all of that information there is an artical listed on the internet under 1898 shotgun, look through the content of the search and you will find a manual that will tell you how to take you shotgun apart and also how to do five safety tests to tell you weather the shotgun is safe to shoot. About the difference in the two shotgun there is not much and both are just as likley to blow up as the other because of age or lack of care.
