Depends. the original Hornet was made on converted 22LR's. That's why they also made .222 and 223 diameter bullets. So what ya got?

rimfire vs centerfire cartridges will at first look tell you not no but he!! no. Now if your 22lr is also made in a centerfire version, like the Ruger 77/22 vs 77/hornet, then maybe. But, you would have to come up with a centerfire bolt and in this day and age I would also change out the barrel for the .223/.224 diameter, as compared to the 22lr smaller diameter just to be safe. So I would imagin that for the cost of the bolt and barrel changes you can probably pick up a good new or used rifle.........

Thanks TSR1965, all the Ruger 77/? series rifles I have delt with had the clamp on barrel. I had assumed that the 77/hornet was the same, but I had wondered about it. Good to know....

ABSOLUTELY NOT! Different cartridge all together, and the 22LR has a diameter of 0.222", while the early Hornets had a diameter of 0.223 inch. The Hornet bullet is jacketed, the 22LR is not. The modern Hornet has a 0.224" bullet. The 0.002" difference does not sound like much, until you add in the bullet jacket.

    ern98,

The Ruger 77/22 in 22LR, and the one in Hornet are two different rifles. The hornet barrel is THREADED into the reciever, and the Hornet barrel is made for 0.224" bullets.

Aw come on. Some of you must have been around long enough to know that the original 22 hornets were built on guns that were originaly chambered for the 22LR. Thats why bullet companys made 45gr bullets that were .222 or .223. Look at some "old" loading manuals.

My Hornet is on a 1922 Springfield 22LR rifle barrel.
    The Hornet predated .224 barrels.
Both .223 & .224 diameter bullets can be fired from the 22LR barrel but accuracy suffers slightly.
