Mauser Leupold Bases

Does anyone know if the 2 piece Leupold Standard Mounts for a Mauser 98 require you to file down the stripper clip emboss off the top of the receiver? I would like to not have to do that if at all possible. Thanks

Consider the Leupold 1 piece bar mount. It is stronger, requires only one drill hole in the rear, two in the front, with no filing of the receiver. You can remove the scope and if you do not disturb one side of the rear locking screws, return to "near zero". Any detachable mounts will not be this low, you want a low as possible scope. Also this type of mount allows for generous left / right alignment of the scope body to the barrel with the rear locking screws. You do not need a alignment bar to align the two pairs of rings because it is a one piece. Redfield also makes similar mount.

Generally yes, because there really isn't room for the two screw holes aft of the slope rising up to the stripper clip guide. I've seen where folks reduce the length and then carve the front of the rear base to fit up against the slope, but I've never seen one which looked professional/good.

Personally I remove the guide and use the Warne Weaver type bases. Their extended rear base when trimed can be extended over the stripper clip hole and makes up a neat rear square bridge conversion. I often then solder the trued base down and solder plugs ontop of the screws. But, you have better get it staight ture and level or else the result looks good but isn't....

The rear base from a Small Ring 96 set can be used if you want to avoid stripping the clip seat. The SR96 and LR98 use the same height rear base. It is the front base that is taller on the SR set. The screw spacing is also closer on the SR rear base.

This basically leaves you stuck buying two base sets in order to rob the rear base from the one.

Thanks for all the help. I think I will try the one piece bases and see how that looks. Thanks again.

I suggest the one piece as well. However, there is enough room for the Weaver style rear base on the back ring of a Mauser {added: 2 holes}.

The one piece will usually save you money as most gunsmiths charge by the hole. As noted it's one hole instead of two on the rear ring.

Something I did was to go to Midway USA and get a picatinny style one piece for your Mauser. That way you can go 0 MOA or up to 30 MOA if you want. Mine was 20 MOA. Farrel makes an outstanding base for these if you are willing to pay $100 bucks or so. Otherwise EGW is available at Midway. SWFA is another good place to look for the one piece picatinny style bases.

Just curious but are you building a rifle and retaining only a 98 action, or are you scoping a 98 and retaining the military barrel?
