The details of a damascus barrels are brought out in the process of finishing the metal
(bluing or browning) Just before the barrels are finished they are swabbed down with a mild acid like nitric or hydrocloric acid. This brings out the pattern in the metal.

I'm afraid just cleaning the barrels will have little effect on the appearance of the damascus or twist paterns. If they have lost their contrast, refinishing is the only solution.
