I am looking for suggestions for a new scope for my .257. Mostly what magnification. I am currently using a Zeiss 3x-9x Diavari. My eyesight seems a little insufficient. THANKS.

Zeiss, esp the Diavari series are very good scopes. What are you planning to use the rifle/scope combo for? Hunting or target? How far are you planning to shoot? A price range budget will definite help?

Warning! You'll get plenty of recommendations/opinions.

Unless you just want a new scope, I can't see a need. If you want more magnification, maybe a 3-12 would help but for a hunting rifle, that should be plenty. I once had a customer wanting a high X variable because he said he "couldn't see the target" with a relatively high quality scope he already had. With the new scope he could see but the field of view was so narrow, he"couldn't find the target".

I tend to agree with Mobuck and FEENIX that the scope you have is going to be hard to improve on much. That said, I just put a 4.5X14X40 LR/T 30mm tube with mil-dot reticle Leupold on my 7mm Rem Mag Sendero. I really like it, especially the side focus ring that allows quick focus at any distance. There seems to be plenty of field of view for my purpose for this rifle which primarily is for 250 to 600 yard shots. You might try one at a shop and see if you think there is significant difference from your Zeiss. Wouldn't be surprised if you just stayed with the Zeiss but this Leupold looks like a winner too.

You got the best scope. Maybe if you want to go "weatherby" there are some german built weatherby scopes for sale on this site.

    kallie,

Here is a site with real good scopes to look at. I use Burris, Leupold, Nikon, Sightron, NightForce, Zeiss, and Schmidt & Bender. Not in that order either, but task specific. If you call, and talk to Alex, and let him know your needs, and wants, he will be very helpful.

I agree that the scope you have is a real good choice. So, lets try a question; do you think that your scope might need cleaning? 9x on deer size game is usually considered fine out to 400yds and more. But if you say it seems insuffiecient then I wonder if you've gotten a haze or something on one lens or the other that is cutting into the optimal viewing abilities for that scope. Now if you want to shoot longer range at smaller game/targets then that's something else all together.

Thanks for all the suggestions. This is just what I am looking for. I got the rifle for antelope hunting and want to use it to it's full potential.

    Several things going on here:
1: need a higher magnifacation scope
2: need a scope of equal clarity and value to your davari
3: need a low power scope for close shot opertunities

To answer these you need to look no further than
    Swarovski's Z-5 3.5-18X44 BRH. It'll give you the
power spread your looking for along with the value
and clearity of the Daveri. Plus the BRH reticule will
give you the ballistic compensation you will need for
those long shots. It's not cheep at $1500, but things
that are worthwhile are never cheep.
