This would date by serial number to 1954. I think Model 17 production started in 1957.

Sounds like the gun needs a good cleaning.

4" barrel not normally found on pre Model 17. Pre Model 18 perhaps. Unless for some reason somebody rebarreled it? The front sight would likely be the indicator. Ramped on the 18, Patridge on the 17. If by chance it is a 4" pre 17, it could have some collectors value.

I checked Supica & Nahas's, Smith & Wesson reference book. They have identified a revolver similar to your description as the K-22 Combat Masterpiece, (not the Target Masterpiece). As I noted in my previous post the most identifying feature besides the 4" barrel length is the ramped front sight. As Neal has noted, we need quality photos for accurate identification and valuation.

Other then the grips, it looks like the one in the S & W book.

Things are rough now money wise for lots of folks. My WAG that a 22 Combat Masterpiece in V.G. condition would be in the $350-$500 range.

It's probably a K-22 Combat Masterpiece (Pre-Model 18). Based on the serial number (date), the Target Stocks are later replacements. For a 1954 gun the grips, either Magna or Target, should be the diamond center checkered type. It appears to have a standard hammer and trigger, so the grips were probably originally the Magna type.
