I have this barrel and it measures 4 inches long from chamber end to muzzle. What does the SA mean?

Thanks

Springfield Armory Inc (the commercial manufacturer) is probably a good guess. It definitely was not made by Springfield Armory (the US Government Armory).

It is likely for a Commander-length 1911-type pistol.

Definitely a barrel from Springfield Armory 1911, 45ACP, Commander.

I think my S&W 1911 also says "S.A." on it. Could it not be referring to the Single Action nature of the 1911 .45 to which this barrel belongs?

Not a chance...check your S&W again. Unless it has been altered with a different barrel, it will not say "SA".
