.22 WMR=.22 Magnum

Or Winchester Magnum Rimfire, anyway it is a different way to describe a .22 magnum. Wish the ammo's cost was a little closer to the cost of its little brother, the .22LR. I love to shoot my 10/22 in .22 mag but I gotta eat also.

the 22 wrm- is NOT the same as a 22 magnum- it is an old black powder load- although they are now loaded w/nitro powder, they do not develope the breech pressure that a 22 mag will- do NOT fire 22 Mag in a WMR chamber.

NO! 22WRF is the old black powder loadThe .22 WRF (Winchester Rimfire) is still being produces in limited quantities. This cartridges was designed for the older model Winchester 1890. The .22 WRF is very similar in size to the .22 Magnum, but with velocities in the 1400 fps range. The .22 WRF and .22 Magnum cartridges are NOT interchangeable. Actually the term ".22 Magnum" is what Smith & Wesson called its K-frame revolver chambered for the .22 Remington Jet, a necked-down .357. Smith began registering trademarks with "Magnum" in them after the first .357 Magnum was introduced in 1935. Next came the .44 Magnum, the .41 Magnum and the .22 Magnum. H&R registered the .32 H&R Magnum name. As stated, the WRF and WMR are NOT the same cartridge. It is common to call the WMR the .22 Magnum, but it is technically incorrect.

I think the crux is that the .22 magnum (the commonly used name) is designated .22WMRF, whereas the old cartridge is .22WRF.Winchester magnum rimfire as opposed to Winchester rimfire. Some folks call the WMRF, WRF, or just .22 magnum. I've never seen a WRF, nor the cartridge, but you have to check all the time unless you have only one gun. Just ask a guy who has a .44 mag and a .45 LC! Or a 30-30 and a '32 Win Spl!

digger, Bee: .22 WMR [Win. Magnum Rimfire] is a modern high-powered RF cartridge and frequently called simply '.22 Magnum.' The .22 WRF [Winchester RimFire] is from a much earlier era. May even have originated in BP days - I know I have seen at least one 'semi-smokeless' box. They are *NOT* interchangeable although they are similar in appearance (beast cited some good comparables), both being substantially longer than the standard .22 LR. Typically, WRF ammo is at least 50% more expensive than the magnum version and the pre-1986 (W-W has made two limited runs - '86 & '94) ammo may be of some collector value depending largely on the mfg & box condition.

The WRF cartridge was developed specificaly for the 1890 winchester. During the years several different guns were chambered for it.Remington introduced their own version of this cartridge and called it Remington special. I still shoot it occasionally and it is pretty hot for an old girl.

I'm still confused. Simpler question: Can I shoot .22 WMR in say a Ruger 10/22 chambered for .22 Magnum?-Marcus
