1863 colt musket

intrested in knowing the value..has been in the family for many years and is rumored to have been owned by my great great grandfather who served with a unit from illinois as a scout during the civil war or so i am told..another family member has it and wants to sell it due to financial hardship..i will buy it myself if i have to but i will not be home till christmas or a few days before..musket is a ball and cap .50 cal i think..have not seen it in a few years but i do know it is in excellent shape still has the ram rod..and said 1863 on top of the rec and colt below that..any ideas as to the value??

    I've seen these go for $5000 in really nice shape, but so long as it is shootable you are looking at about $1500+. It is in .58 Caliber, I'm pretty sure.

    Would need more information to give you an accurate value. All markings would be very helpful. Things like number of barrel bands, length of barrel, correct caliber, muzzleloader or breachloader are also important. Then you look at condition. Is the barrel bright or dark or rusted inside?Rust on the outside of the barrel or lockplate? Does it function properly? Is the stock cracked or cut down? Its fair to say that any original, unaltered Civil War rifle in fair condition or better would be worth at least a thousand dollars.
