Would like information Re: the number of "middlemen" that are involved in the movement of firearms from the manufacturer to the retailer. Also, have heard the term "jobber" what is the difference between them and a "wholesaler"?Do salesmen acutally call on gun shops ? If so, do they represent the manufacturer or the wholesaler? Thanks, 11thcanopy

far as i know manufacturers sell to distributors (wholesalers, jobbers, whatever) who in turn sell to retail dealers.i don't know if gun companies have sales reps who call on dealers. maybe they once did but i would sort of doubt it in todays market.

    1. Just about the same as any other industry. Generally, you are going to have one middleman (distributor, jobber, manufacturers rep). As with other retail industry you will have certain manufacturers that sell factory direct to the retailer.2. A Jobber(basically a wholsaler, Manuf, rep) normally sells at wholesale level to the retailer only. A wholesaler can be a jobber, distributor, etc. or anybody that sells to the general public at other than retail price.3. Yes to both.

Quantity purchased determines the price paid at every level. When I had an FFL, I found that my local "gun shop", in addition to selling Colt guns at full retail, was really a distributor who also sold Colt guns to many other dealers at "distributor cost". What a racket: they paid the lowest possible price for their guns, and sold them at different prices depending upon the customer! Some large retailers actually pay the manufacturer less for guns than small dealers pay their distributor. It's no wonder that small dealers find it difficult to compete. Those that survive do so by offering service; that is why I am willing to pay more to a local dealer than buy from a cheaper large retailer.Neal
