I have tryed reloads for my 257 mag. and I can't seem to find a load that will shoot under 1.5 inches. I'm trying to load 115 gr. silvertip nosler-winchester multicoat bullets. If any one can help with there experiances , with 257 weatherbys please be so kind and let the cat out of the bag. thanks DES

Try IMR-4831 63 grains for your 115gr bullet. It should chrono at around 3200fps. Can't guarantee groups not knowing your gun but it will shoot sub moa normally. DO NOT EXCEED 64 GRAINS AS THIS IS THE MAX LOAD. Good luck & be sure to verify any load data you get with a manufacturer. RGPS: For a "most accurate" load switch to 100gr Nosler Ballistic tips same IMR-4831 with 66 grains. DO NOT EXCEED 68 GRAINS AS THIS IS THE MAX LOAD.[This message has been edited by rg666 (edited 11-20-2001).]

rg, I have a 300 weatherby and have been try loads do you have some ideas on it? I have been through 4831 4350 4320 h4350 and I am now going to try h1000. The gun is a rem 700 and seems to be rather finique. thanks Rich

Richie Rich What is your preferred bullet weight and what will you be using it for? I have several good loads for you but need that info first. RG

I have two 300 weatherbys, and they will only shoot decent with a large load of imr 7828 and 180 gr. round nose bullets. check your reload manuel for max loads. tried noslers, and remington factory loads with the same results,8 inch patterns at 100 yards.

rg,I forgot about this.I seem to like nosler balistic tips in 165, I like the 165 because it is very stable in the 300 so I would just like to find a good powder combo for it. I just picked up some h1000 to try in it. The best I have gotten was a 3/4" at 100 with imr 4320 (69.5 grains)thanks Rich

Madwire, nearly ALL guns have some freebore. They almost have too, with the exception of custom loads for THAT particular gun. Ther are many reasons for that.Weatherby GUARANTEES 1 1/2" three shot group accuracy out of the box,...no other mfr' does that on a production hunting rifle. Is it possible to get Weatherby sub MOA groups? Yes. With other guns? Yes. Is accuracy getting better overall? Yes.Many things will influence group size.More later. Promised wife Christmas tree shopping.
    Happy Bullet Holes!

Rich We should be able to improve that group by doing some "fiddling" with the bullet seating depth. I sounds like the load is pretty good. Try this load if you want to. The load I was going to suggest is 78.8 grains of RL19 behind the 165 gr ballistic tip with a federal 215 primer. Use Federal 215 primers for ALL 300 Weatherby loads. Anyway back to the fiddling part. Take a fired case with "no" live primer or powder and put a bullet into the case so it's barely in and straight without falling out. Chamber the round slowly. Lock the bolt down then remove the case slowly. Measure it with a caliper. Do this several times. This measurement should provide the maximum OAL of the cartridge for your gun. Reduce this number slightly & use it when seating the bullets.(Only make one reload. Then chamber it to make sure the bolt will close easily& normally. This will reduce any jump and give you better accuracy. Please let me know how this works out. RG

With freebored Weatherbys, you're not likely to seat the bullet out close to the rifling while still fitting the magazine.Heavier, round nosed bullets might get you the closest to the rifling.
