I'm pretty sure most of the S&W rifles were made by Howa in Japan. They also made some of the Weatherby rifles. They sell in the $300-$400 range around here. They are well made.

If you can find the latest issue of RifleShooter [ Jan.], they have a feature article on Howa rifles. They were built for Smith&Wesson, Mossberg and Weatherby [Vanguard]. My son has a Howa and it seems to be a very well made gun.

It is indeed the Howa 1500. They are well designed with some nice features like a flat bottomed action and a large lug. They are well made as well. $300-$400 is about right depending on the precise model, i.e. 1500 Mountaineer, Delux Hunter etc., for a rifle in 100% condition down to $200-$250 for Very Good. Price will also vary somewhat depending upon your region and the demand in that region. Should make a fine hunting rifle.
