Best buy on Gun Safes

Looking for some opinions on what would be the best buy for a gun safe. Primarily interested in fire and theft protection with a little decor for about 24 long guns and 16 pistols. Have some expensive guns but the most priceless are the $100 & $200 heirlooms that would hurt if lost. Shopping now and wanted some advice other than the sales people. Thanks.
Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

your best deal would be to go to a regular safe store and get a used one. i bought a 60 year old safe that weighs about 500 lbs holds 10 long guns and10 pistols for 500$. it is really old fashioned with wheels but it serves the purpose

I would look at the Zanotti safes---they are made of 6 interlocking sections that permit you to disassemble the safe for moving. It may be worth considering unless you plan to never move.Neal

One thing to consider is the presence or absence of handles, knobs, dials, etc. on the outside of the safe which can be damaged by would be thieves. The safe I have has two recessed key locks at 90 degrees from the door which makes them very difficult to drill out. There is nothing to pry, break off, or bend on the outside of the safe. It is also chained to a steel support to keep someone from carting it off.Usually, a thief won't break into your safe but will ruin it trying. Then you can't get it open.Best regards

Best deals I ever saw on safes were at gun shows, cash and carry. The dealer does not want to haul it home. Be prepared to move it yourself.

I bought a safe at a auction. It is a large one, with double doors and fire proofed. I took the shelves out, except for the top one, and made a gun rack that will fit about 30 guns. Cost $150, plus $150 for the truck to take it home, with a power lift. Make sure the lock works and get a combo, or it will cost extra for a safe expert to crack it open. It cost about $100 to change the combo, highly reconmended, if you buy it locally. Menards, a discount Home Depot, had a 14 gun safe, on sale for $250. It weighed about 350 lbs. Mine weighs about 1100 lbs.

I got mine at Academy. It is a Cannon fire-lined safe. Rated to 1200 degrees for 30 min. I think it weighs about 600 lbs and it will hold 15-20 long guns. Has a shelf for storage. It was $1000 including delivery. It was my graduation present so cost didn't bother me.

I have a suggestion that might be of interest to some (only good for handguns). I went to a used office supply junkyard and they had a good variety of old fireproof filing cabinets. I picked one up that was made by a safe company for $100. It is old and very heavy duty and not the prettiest thing in the world, but it works great to store my handguns in. This particular place I went had many to choose from.
