Olympic Uppers NOT Mil-Spec???

At our last gunshow I picked up an Olympic 16" upper w/bolt & carrier and noticed it had what appeared to be an M-16 bolt carrier in it. I thought being a good citizen I would swap it out with an extra AR-15 carrier that I had on hand ... but the lugs wouldn't engage. I pulled the carrier out of another AR, tried it and the lugs wouldn't engage with it either ... at first I thought the bolts were different, but all bolts worked in all guns and the Oly carrier also worked in all guns, however, only the Oly carrier would work in the Oly upper! Anyway a trip to my favorite machinest corrected the problem by cutting away the "excess material" ... but I thought I'd ask if anyone else had run into this ...

I've heard you should't switch bolts from one gun to another , matched fit?

JetI've heard that too, but not sure if I beleive it or not ... all the parts are made on an assembly line, just like cars so why shouldn't parts interchange? At anyrate I was only changing out the carrier, not the bolt.

Never heard of it.I have probably put 60 ARs together and have a spare 10-15 B&C.I always check HS and never had one over NG.What was wrong that needed machining?cpermd

cpermd,Other than it appeared to be an M-16 carrier, nothing was wrong with it, I just had the sear trip section of the carrier removed.I too have built many AR's and never ran into this problem, however I've always used parts that are mil-spec and never ran into a problem with interchange-ability, thus my question.

I have heard not only are they not mil spec they are junk. I really wanted one and the price of their plinker is attractive but after asking around I have been told to save my money for a bushy.

Could you give us more detail about what you found wrong with the upper ? I think you might be giving Olympic an undeserved bad rap on this one.
