Win M-97 Magazine Plug

I need a magazine plug for my Winchester Model 97 12 ga to be legal for hunting. I would think that I can make one out of a hardwood dowel rod. If this is the case what is the correct diameter and dowel length for this model. Also is there any additonal shaping required? If anyone has an original part, please measure it for me. Any advise on this would be very welcome. I don't really need an authentic vintage part, just something that works and is safe.

I should think a piece of 1/2" dowel would be fine. That's what I use. If your's is a 5 shot gun, cut the dowel to be as long as 2 of your shells. It will fit inside the coil spring OK. It's simple and it works.
