Could someone please tell me how the front sight base is removed from the barrel, I need to replace a bayonet stud band that had the lug removed but it will not go over the front sight. Are all type rifle front sights removable? I have another arisaka that was sporterized and it has a nonissue front sight that I would like to replace.

There is a pin on the side of the base that keyes to the bbl. Drive it out with a punch, then drive the sight off with a brass hammer. You may not have to do this. Try the following. Loosen (remove) all screws that hold the band to the stock. Tap it forward a little. Now remove the plate that sits in the front of the band. Drive the bbl band clear of the stock, rotate it 90 degrees (turn upside down). Now slide it over the sight, and off!Good luck, have fun, be careful!Morty

If you have to remove the front sight, note that the front sight is press fit and cross pinned. Drive the pin out before you try driving off the sight.

Sorry, but i'm getting senile and did not give you the correct angle . you must rotate the bbl band 180 degrees to invert it. it will then come off without disturbing the sight, good luck, have funmorty

Thanks V35 and King999 for your responses, I think I have a better handle on how the front sight goes on. The sight that was added to the Arisaka to sporterize it has a pin on the side and I will try shortly to drive out the pin and then tap the sight off the barrel. However, on the rifle with the original Arisaka front sight it does not have a pin anywhere. I also tried as you suggested King999 to rotate the bayonetlug band and try to slide it over the front sight but it will not fit. Does this mean that the front sight is a press fit and just requires tapping with a brass hammer to remove?

red there IS a pin. THe early rifles were well finished and probably the pin was buffed down matching the sight base. remember, it is keyed to a narrow channel on top of the bbl, so figure out where it SHOULD be and try the punch at a logical point.I do not understand why the inverted bbl band did not fit over the sight. try again; it is a snug fit.morty
