I am in the planning on building two custom mausers. One is 308 win and the other in a 300 win mag., right now I am getting accessories together like scopes, rings, mounts, stocks, fluted bull barrels, firing pin kits, triggers, shrouds and other things that I might need. Those will be used for hunting and target shooting, therefor would want a very good recievers. What model do I want to use? I already know that a 98K type reciever will be used, but from what country? Any advise would be welcome.Thanksspec.4

You'll want to make sure that your actions are the proper length for the cartridge. An intermediate length Yugo M-48 would work for the .308, but you'd need the long action for the .300. There aren't too many poor Mauser actions, regardless of country of origin; and almost any of them would work for you given the proper length. That having been said, I think the 1909 Argentine is about the best.

Thanks for the fast reply. I am also thinking about changing the 300 win mag to a 300 WSM. Would I use the same reciever as the 308win, the yugo m48? Thanks once againspec.4

PLEASE TAKE NO OFFENCE AT THIS POST, BUT SENCE ABOUT 1995, THE MANUFACTURES, REMINGTON, SAVAGE, WINCHESTER, RUGER, BROWNING, & ECT HAVE BEEN MAKING VERY ACCURRET RIFLES RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX , 1" GROUPS OR BETTER, (HAND LOADING HELPS) THAT IT MAKES NO SENCE TO SPEND AS MUCH MONEY TO PIECE TOGETHER A JUNKER AT TWICE OR THREE TIMES THE MONEY, OF THE COST OF A NEW OR GOOD USED RIFLE IN THE CALIBER YOU WAN'T. THINK ABOUT THIS, MAUSER ACTION 100.00 TO 150.00, BBL 200.00 TO 300.00, STOCK 100.00 TO 200.00, SOMEONE TO LOWER BOLT HANDLE, CHAMBER, HEADSPACE, TESTFIRE, 150.00 TO 250.00, DRILL & TAP FOR SCOPE 35.00 TO 50.00, TRIGGER WORK 50.00, & MANY OTHER ITEMS >>>> YOU HAVE SPENT WAY MORE ON THIS, FOR WHAT? SOMETHING THAT IS WORTH LESS THAN HALF WHAT A FACTORY GUN WOULD SELL FOR.>>>>>>BUY A NEW OR GOOD USED RIFLE IN THE CARTRIDGE YOUR LOOKING FOR, & INVEST YOUR MONEY IN RELOADING GEAR, & SCOPE, YOU WILL STILL HOLD THE VALUE. ANYTIME SOMEONE COMES IN WITH A "CUSTOM GUN" UNLESS MADE & SIGNED BY A BIG NAME IT'S WORTH 200.00 OR LESS>> LIKE HAVING A CUSTOMIZED YUGO!!!!!!

I will not take offence for someone speaking their mind. That said, I am making these to past down to my kids when my wife and I have them. Knowing that I made them, may make them treasure them more, so to me, it's money well spent. I can do most of the work my-self. The only thing I can not do is replace the barrel, chamber, and test fire the new rifle. Thanks for the advice.Spec.4 [This message has been edited by spec.4 (edited 01-26-2002).]

1 inch isn't good enough!! I want .200-.300 without neck turning, weighing cases and all the other fancy stuff. I just want to sit down, load it and shoot it and kill varmints at long ranges!! If I can hand it down to the next generation who cares what its worth?
