Probably you are the only one who can decide if the III's are worth the difference in price to you. for me they are. The principle difference is in the lens coatings. The II's are fully single coated, meaning all glass to air surfaces are coated to reduce internal reflections. The III's are fully multicoated, thus further reducing the amount of internal reflection by admiting additional light of different wave lengths. The end result is that the III's transmit more light to your eye giving a brighter picture. To me it is worth it. I don't buy any scopes that are not fully multicoated. If you are looking for good quality on a budget, consider the Nikon scopes and take a look at www.bearbasin.com

I have a vari x II and it is a wonderful scope. You have to determine what kind of conditions you hunt under also. For me, I primarily hunt eastern whitetails, where a long shot might be 200 yds. Also, I am able to see very well in the "shadowed" areas of the woods while hunting. I dont think you would notice a difference between the two scopes unless you used one right after the other. That being said, if you have the money go for the vari x III. The scope will last a lifetime literally, and 200 dollars spread over many years is a minimal difference.

They are expensive and I'm just a hard working guy all my life so I don't have money, but the difference is tremendous right at black dark when the big bucks are starting to cautiously move about...when I learned that, and considered that hunting is my primary recreational hobby, I made the decision to get the III's...and the good news is they hold their resale vale anyway so it is a very safe investment...lifetime warranty, etc

I had the urge to post, but these guys have already said it right. You get what you pay for, and you pay for what you get. I love the III that I just bought recently. Cheaperthandirt.com and Natchezss.com both have great prices.

Leupold has discontinued the Vari X II line now. They have a new line coming out called the VX2 I think. They are due out very shortly.

bullhauler,Where do you find info (price, finish, reticle ect) on the lightseeker 30?I'm kind of in the market for a scope for my new (to me) Steyr SSG 69. The Kales 6X42 is ok but I prefer somthing more along the lines of a 20X fixed power ... it makes the whites of their eyes a little clearer
