223 vs 5.56

I'm in the mood for another firearm, so I thought I'd fill a void and purchase a .22 centerfire. I was leaning towards the .223 because of the cheap and easy availability of surplus ammo. However, I was told by someone that there is a difference between the .223 & 5.56, that it was not interchangable. I was going with a sporting rifle (Ruger #1) not a military type so this may be an issue. If I can't pick up lots of ammo for cheap, I may as well go with a .22-250. Can anyone out there set me straight? Thanks.

What Saxon said You can also add 308 Win/7.62 nato to the list as I've interchanged those two in my M1A, HK-91 and Rem 700.

In theory the longer bullets of the GI ammo will cause higher pressure and most commercial chambers have shorter throats than the GI 5.56.In practice-NADA Difference.SaxonI talked to the auctioneer and called the BATF office in LR about the Sweeper.BATF never called me back and I am supposed to call the prosecutor in Batesville on Monday.I want it if it can be transferred through John Norrell.cpermd
